Exhaust fans draw the hot or humid air from within and push this air out from the shaft window while replacing it with fresh air from outside. It attracts warm air and expels it out through a duct. Different Types Of Exhaust Fan Motor

Exhaust fan motors usually have single phase induction motors, like that of ceiling fans. They are designed according to the functions they need to serve.

  1.  Standard Exhaust Fan Motor

Most small exhaust fans use this standard motor, that is, the single phase motor. These motors work on AC principle, and in every cycle, they attain an alternating maximum and minimum power. They are durable and sturdy.

  1.  Split-Phase Motor

The split-phase motor is used in large industrial exhaust fans. These motors have both start and run windings that get energized when started. They can run well on medium current input. Owing to their utilization in large and bulky industrial equipment, these motors go through a significant amount of mechanical stress.

  1.  Capacitor-Start Motors

As the name suggests, capacitor-start motors have a built-in capacitor with series windings. They generate twice the torque as compared to other motors, with much less current input. Thus, they are not only powerful but also energy efficient. Because of their high power generating capacity, they are used in large industrial ventilation machinery.

Uses Of Exhaust Fans

Here are some uses of exhaust fans.

Kitchens: While cooking, lots of smoke, heat, odour, and oils are released. When installed in kitchens, exhaust fans help push out these unwanted pollutants from the kitchen, thereby, keeping it fresh and dry.

Bathrooms: Bathrooms are a hotbed for moisture which is very harmful as it can lead to the creation of mold spores within the bathroom. Using an exhaust fan in a bathroom helps drive away the excess moisture and unwanted odours from your bathroom and keeps it dry, clean, and fresh.

Industries: In many industries, smoke, steam, and other air pollutants are released due to the industrial activities. These need to be eliminated from within the buildings to prevent dampness and corrosion of mechanical equipment. A powerful industrial exhaust fan can be ideal for driving these pollutants out and keep the moisture and humidity in check.

Hospitals: Hospitals are always filled with allergens and other harmful pollutants since patients have compromised immune systems. Thus, it essential that the air quality within hospitals is clean and fresh to avoid the spread of diseases through airborne germs and allergens. Exhaust fans can help to circulate fresh air within the hospital and drive out the polluted air out.

  1.  Fan Model

Exhaust fans are used in a wide variety of applications and hence, fan manufacturers offer different models depending on their particular usage. Each of these models has features that are best suited for certain applications, such as a small bathroom exhaust fan will be best suited for bathrooms. Thus, you need to sort your needs before purchasing an exhaust fan.  

  1.  Capacity

Each room within your house will demand a specific ventilation system. While fans may be adequate for certain rooms, exhaust fans would be the right way to go for bathrooms, kitchens, and chimney places. It is important to consider the capacity of the exhaust fan motor, that is, the torque required to provide the desired ventilation. The airflow of exhaust fans is measured in cubic feet per minute (CFM). For small-scale fans, a CFM rating between 20-30 is sufficient whereas, for heavy-duty fans, the CFM rating can scale up as high as 300.

  1.  Noise

Fan motors can be noisy and loud because of the constant rotation of blades and movement. This can be quite irritating. For domestic purposes, you should choose such exhaust fans that are quieter during operation. The sound created by domestic exhaust fans is measured in sones. One sone would equal the noise created by a quiet refrigerator. So, you could choose a fan with a rating of 1 or 2 sones.

Like ceiling fans, energy efficient exhaust fans are also available. These fans deliver high performance even with less power consumption. Moreover, energy efficient exhaust fans are quieter than the regular ones.

  1.  Automation and Sensors

With the advancement of technology, exhaust fans have also undergone huge transformations. Today, many models come with humidity and motion sensors. A humidity sensor can read the humidity level in your bathroom and start operating when the humidity level is high. It will also automatically shut down when the humidity level is normalized. A motion sensor can detect when someone is in the bathroom or kitchen and start operating lightly. So, while buying an exhaust fan, look out for these smart features too.
