What Are Floor Fans? Floor fans, as the name suggests, refer to those fans that are placed on the floor of a room for cooling on the floor level. They are portable and can be located in any corner of your room that you find convenient. Along with ceiling fans, they are a very popular and efficient method of cooling rooms. However, they have an advantage over ceiling fans - they do not need permanent installation, and hence, they can be used for cooling outdoor spaces such as balconies, terraces, and patio. Another advantage of floor fans is that they can reach even those corners of your room where the ceiling fan cannot. Floor fans are available in many types, shapes, and sizes. They are usually lightweight and come with a base for support. Floor fans are either made of metal (steel) or superior grade plastic. Most of them come with an oscillation feature - they can rotate side to side at a 180-degree angle, providing a wider coverage area of air circulation. Some fans are also height adjustable with tiltable heads, so you can tilt their frame and adjust their height and get the airflow at any level that is convenient for you. Their user-friendly and compact design makes them ideal for cooling small personal spaces and for those rooms that tend to get stuffy. Floor fans can create excellent ventilation in rooms. Power Consumption and the Type of Motor Used Almost all types of floor fans operate in DC. They use DC motors and hence, can work quite efficiently even while consuming less power. DC motors are known to be highly energy efficient, thus making floor fans also an energy efficient option for cooling your home. Regular floor fans consume up to 55-75 Watts on an average, while the energy efficient models consume even less. Thus, you are not only saving energy but also cutting down your electricity costs. Types Of Floor Fans Let us look at the types of floor fans.
  1. Table Fan
Table fans are small, compact, and lightweight. They usually function as desktop fans and can be placed on desks, counters, and tabletops. They are ideal for cooling small spaces.
  1. Pedestal Fan
These fans come with a height-adjustable feature. There is usually a knob that allows you to increase or decrease their height, so you can get the air circulation to the level that suits you. They are known as Pedestal fans or ‘Stand Fans.’ Most models of pedestal fans come with the oscillation feature.
  1. Window Fans
Window Fans are placed near open windows or outlets. They draw out the stale air from the room and continuously replace it with fresh air from outside. They do not let the air stagnate within the room and are great for ventilation purpose. Window fans are an excellent choice for stuffy and humid rooms.
  1. Tower Fans
Tower fans are tall and slender, much like a tower. These vertical fans oscillate on a base and blow out air at a 90-degree angle. Due to their compact and slim design, they do not take up much space and hence, can be placed anywhere in your room. These fans are powerful and very quiet.  
  1. Box Fans
This fan is extremely versatile in functionality, that is, it can be either mounted on an open window for ventilation or placed on the floor level for air circulation within the room. Like window fans, box fans also circulate the air and bring in fresh air from outside.
  1. Bladeless Fans
Bladeless fans are one of a kind. Functioning on air-multiplier technology, they multiply the airflow up to 15 times. Bladeless fans emit the air from a ring-like hollow. They do not have any visible blades as their blades are hidden in the base of the fan. They are sturdy, safe, easy to clean, and extremely attractive. Benefits Of Floor Fans On hot summer days, floor fans can be a blessing. They are economical, user-friendly, easy to operate, and portable. These attributes make them a favorite household choice.
