India’s Smallest Biggest Problem – Mosquitoes
Apart from the fact that mosquitoes are very annoying and itchy, they also are a source of a number of deadly diseases. India is a developing country where 17 percent of the urban crowd lives in slums and about 72 percent of India’s population resides in rural areas.
Here are some of the mosquito-borne diseases:
- Dengue
Dengue is caused by four closely related viruses which can affect a single person several times in their life. Its symptoms include high fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, rashes, nausea, vomiting and joint pains.
- Malaria
Malaria is caused by four species of the genus Plasmodium – P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae and P. ovale. P. falciparum is the deadliest as it affects the brain. Single drug to cure malaria is ineffective because of which a cocktail of drugs is used to control infection.
- Japanese encephalitis
JE infects the central nervous system including the brain and spinal cord. The issue with a JE infection is that its symptoms are very mild or none at all. 30 out of 100 infected people die of this infection.
- Chikungunya
The Aedes aegypti mosquito spreads Chikungunya. Its symptoms include headache, fatigue, fever, vomiting, nausea and joint pain. There is no vaccine for the treatment of Chikungunya although it doesn’t kill.
- Lymphatic filariasis
Lymphatic filariasis damages the lymphatic system and causes swollen limbs. This is spread by parasitic filarial worms, Brugia malayi and Brugia timori.
